Charles Franklin is an MIT-educated software developer who helped found the local advocacy organizations Upgrade Cambridge and Green Cambridge.
Charles wants Cambridge to add high-quality, affordable housing that enjoys the presence of trees, is prepared for the changing climate, and doesn't worsen the urban heat island. In addition to renter protections, Charles supports increased home ownership.
While Charles does not support the Affordable Housing Overlay, he has developed an alternative zoning plan that aims to be more consistent with the character of individual neighborhoods and increase greenery while incentivizing affordable housing development.

The production of luxury apartments signals to other developers that they can make money by building more of the same. Perhaps the most insidious cause is speculative investment in land. There are many units that are owned by foreign investors who don’t care about the community.
“I want to use my skills and my knowledge and my ability to talk to people, my willingness to hear what they need, to try and help the underserved the voices that aren't being heard,” Franklin said.
